Trans4Demo produces a series of four policy briefs that translate the project’s research findings and insights into practical recommendations for policymakers and other stakeholders.
Drawing on the project’s research on democratic resilience, populism and the politics of climate change, the policy briefs examine key challenges and opportunities for strengthening democratic governance and effective climate action. Each brief focuses on a specific dimension of the project’s research and provides evidence-based recommendations to support informed policymaking at European, national and local levels.
Together, the four policy briefs offer a comprehensive set of insights for policymakers, practitioners and other stakeholders seeking to better understand the relationship between political change, democratic participation and climate governance.
Policy Brief #1
The first Trans4Demo policy brief, “Beyond Climate Ambition: Strengthening Democratic Legitimacy, Participation and Trust for Europe’s Green Transition”, explores how democratic governance can help make Europe’s green transition more legitimate, inclusive and resilient. Drawing on research and the Sardinian case, it highlights how political contestation, territorial interests and competing understandings of urgency shape climate policy and argues for moving beyond consultation towards meaningful participation, place-based governance and co-ownership. The brief presents practical recommendations for European, national, regional and local policymakers to build trust, strengthen public ownership and ensure that climate ambition is matched by democratic legitimacy.
